First Time Coming to Downey, California – Did You Know?
Downey, California is located to the south-east of Los Angeles and is a quaint little town. Many famous “firsts” happened here, and several famous people came from this area.
The city’s name came from the governor of California at the time, John Gately Downey. Originally from Ireland, Downey was the youngest man to ever be governor of the state. Governor Downey was inclined to believe that oranges would grow abundantly in the area, and proved to be correct. When the Second World War was over, the area farmers also grew other fruits, castor beans, corn and grains.
The city of Downey was in large part the reason aviation became what it is today. This is where the Apollo Space Program first began, and where the space shuttle was born.
In 2008, the comedy movie “The Pineapple Express”, starring Seth Rogan and James Franco was filmed in Downey.
Downey is home to a little over 110,000 residents, who enjoy the quiet of the surrounding areas, and the history the town boasts.
In 1953, the third McDonald’s restaurant was built in Downey. It is currently the oldest McDonald’s to exist, and still has the original golden arches to prove it. In 1952, the first Taco Bell restaurant was opened in Downey. It no longer serves as a Taco Bell, but the building it was in is in its original condition.
Famous people who called Downey their home include Weird Al, who was born there, Miranda Cosgrove, from iCarly fame, and the musical sensation, the Carpenters. The house the Carpenters lived in still stands, and was also featured on one of their album covers.
The Columbia Memorial Space Center is a great place to visit with the whole family. Adults and children alike will enjoy the exhibits and hands on activities. The space shuttle landing simulator is fun, as is the robotics programming. Check out the lunar module, mock space shuttle, and the awesome star gazing telescope.
