First Time Coming to Pomona, California – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
The city takes its name from Pomona, the ancient Roman goddess of fruit. This name was chosen before anyone had ever planted a fruit tree, but by the 1880s, it did become the western anchor of the citrus-growing region due to the arrival of railroads and water from the Coachella Valley.
Religion is deeply embedded in the history of Pomona, with more than 120 churches now standing that represent most religions in society today. These churches reflect European church design and architecture from past eras.
In 2005, Norma Torres became the first woman of Guatemalan heritage to be elected to a mayoral post outside of Guatemala, in Pomona.
TODAY
Located between the Inland Empire and the San Gabriel Valley, Pomona is the seventh largest city of Los Angeles County. Its population was reported at 149,058 people in 2010. Ever since the 1980s, the hilly area between Downtown and Diamond Bar called Phillip’s ranch has experienced rapid growth with homes still being constructed. It is now nearly all residential. Northern Pomona has been somewhat gentrified with more units added and reworked streetscapes. There are several large events held at Pomona’s Fairplex, such as the L.A. County Fair and the NHRA Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.
Pomona is also home to a Swap Meet and a Classic Car Show that is considered to be a Southern California classic. Cal Poly Pomona, the polytechnic university, is located on the west edge of the city.
PRIME LOCATION
Pomona has a total area of 22.964 square miles, over 99% of it land, and is a suburb of Los Angeles located in the Pomona Valley. Pomona is positioned about 27 miles east of Los Angeles, 31 miles west of Riverside, 25 miles north of Santa Ana, and 37 miles west of San Bernardino.
Pomona borders are defined by the cities of San Dimas on the northwest, La Verne and Claremont on the north, Chino Hills and Diamond Bar on the south, Montclair and Chino on the east and Walnut, South San Jose Hills, and Industry on the southwest. Most of the city’s southern and eastern borders are formed by the Los Angeles/San Bernardino county line.
QUALITY OF LIFE
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, has over 21,000 students and is known for its selective and nationally ranked agricultural, engineering and architectural programs. Covering an area of over 1,437 acres, it the second largest land-holding university in the CSU system.
Pomona’s Western University of Health Sciences, which is formerly known as College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, is one of the largest health sciences universities in California. It offers degrees in Osteopathic Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioning, and as of 2010, Dentistry, Optometry, and Podiatry. The Patient Care Center that opened in 2010 serves more than 10,000 patients per year.
